In the Naked Gun movies Leslie Nielson portrays Lt Frank Drebin. The movies are a broader, more slapstick comedy take of the smarter, funnier 1983 television series Police Squad!, a satire of 60's - 70's cop TV shows. It was so deadpan that the audience was confused, and the show was cancelled after only 6 episodes. Matt Groening, creator of The Simpsons, is quoted as saying "If Police Squad! had been made twenty years later, it would have been a smash. It was before its time. In 1982 your average viewer was unable to cope with its pace, its quick-fire jokes. But these days they'd have no problems keeping up, I think we've proved that." If you look around online, I'm sure you could find the original episodes.

WAYNE DYCK
My parents sent me this newspaper clipping. My elementary school vice-principal is cycling across Canada to raise money for children's cancer treatment.
He played semi-pro basketball, if memory serves. His wife was a teacher at the school as well. I remember them being funny, gregarious, good-looking and athletic - he and his wife were universally well-liked by students and staff. Even at 11 or 12 years old we had the sense he was stand-up guy.
There's a website for the ride here, and a Facebook group here.

COOLEST SHOW EVER.
I just started watching Gerry Anderson's 1970 TV show UFO. It's set in the far flung future of 1980, and has lots of cool clothes, cars, haircuts and a more ethnically diverse cast than a most shows on TV at the time. Add spaceships, cheesecake and a groovy John Barry score, and I'm so down.

JACK KIRBY EXHIBITION
Legendary artist Jack Kirby (August 28, 1917 – February 6, 1994) was the Thomas Edison of comics. This week a retrospective of his work was exhibited in Lucerne, Switzerland. They do it right in Europe. Just think; a place with festivals dedicated to Frank Zappa's orchestral music and Jack Kirby's art hangs in museums. Shangri-La.
I'd heard about the exhibit, but didn't expect to find this: a video tour of the show. So, so cool. I've been working on a little Kirby thing of my own. I should have a post ready in a week or so...

ONE FOR COMMON SENSE
Cartoonist par excellence Jeff Smith had to fight off some kook who wanted to ban his books from an elementary school. It's an all-too-rare example of this sort of thing turning out like it should. Jeff tells the story on his blog along with links to news sources covering the story.
